Personalized medicine for severe asthma
Antibody therapies offer new hope for more than 13 million people worldwide with severe asthma – in some cases leading to remission. Since 2016, the number of approved antibodies for asthma treatment has been steadily increasing – but how can we determine which antibody is most effective for each individual? Prof. Dr. Gudrun Ulrich-Merzenich and Bernd Merzenich, together with their clinical colleagues at the University Hospital Bonn and with the support of the University of Bonn, have developed an innovative test procedure to support antibody selection for the treatment of severe asthma. It combines 30 genetic markers with clinical and laboratory diagnostic parameters to create individual asthma profiles using a specific algorithm. This allows asthma subtypes to be differentiated in order to select suitable antibody therapies in a more targeted manner – saving time and money and avoiding suboptimal therapy attempts.
In this interview, Prof. Dr. Gudrun Ulrich-Merzenich and Bernd Merzenich explain the progress that the AsthmaPanel diagnostic tool can mean for patients, physicians, and the healthcare system, how the patenting and market launch preparations are progressing, and offer tips for scientists.

However, this method requires an extremely large amount of methane gas and energy. Prof. Nikolay Kornienko from the University of Bonn has discovered a more climate-friendly alternative for producing ammonia from renewable energy sources. The research team is now presenting its findings in the journal Nature Communications.

A passion for technology development
Dr. Peter Boeker has gone from scientific research to founding a company and successfully launching it on the market with his start-up HyperChrom. He earned his doctorate in physical chemistry at the University of Bonn and, as a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Agriculture, established a working group for gas sensor technology and artificial odor measurement technology. In 2013, he invented and patented the fundamentals for the Flow-Field Thermal Gradient GC and developed it into a certified measurement system. Boeker then founded HyperChrom in 2017. Its gas chromatography devices separate mixtures of substances and determine the quantity of the individual components. HyperChrom has significantly accelerated and improved this “universal weapon” of chemical analysis. "With our invention, we have managed to reduce this process from half an hour to about one minute. This is a drastic reduction while maintaining a very high level of quality," explains Boeker. In an interview with enaCom, he talks about his various roles as a scientist and founder, the development of his start-up over the years, and the importance of the university for the company.
