#Hack4Surgery – Hackathon on digital surgery #Hack4Surgery – Hackathon on digital surgery

One day. One challenge: saving lives

Using machine learning to improve medical decisions in the emergency room – this is the challenge at the #Hack4Surgery hackathon. Students and young scientists are developing innovative solutions to optimize emergency surgery and thereby save lives.

To do this, they use machine learning methods and artificial intelligence. The hackathon will take place on June 6, 2025, all day at the Bonner Bogen. Interested teams can register until May 30. The event is a collaboration between the Bonn Surgical Technology Center (BOSTER) at the University Medical Center Bonn (UKB) and the Transfer Center enaCom at the University of Bonn.

In everyday clinical practice, doctors make difficult decisions every day that have an impact on life and death. Machine learning tools can help them make the right decisions faster and more accurately, thereby actively influencing the lives of patients. At #Hack4Surgery, teams immerse themselves in the possibilities of digital surgery: They work on solutions for prediction models and use real data from the UKB Emergency Center as a basis. The aim is, for example, to better predict whether emergency surgery is necessary for certain symptoms such as abdominal pain. The hackathon offers a unique opportunity to tackle real medical issues and make valuable contacts at the interface between medicine and modeling.

After an introduction to the challenge, participants will work in teams and, with support from experts from BOSTER and the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it), develop their solutions. Participants will also gain insider insights into the laboratories and working environments at BOSTER, which specializes in digital surgery and medical robotics. The three best teams will then pitch their results. After the award ceremony, there will be an opportunity for discussion and networking at the closing get-together.

The offer is aimed at master students and young scientists at the University of Bonn in the fields of machine learning and modeling, especially from computer science and life science informatics. Participation is possible in groups of 2-3 people. Register by May 30th!
