Course content
Conducting scientific research and writing about it are two strands of the same job, and while the research can often be done in your native language, the writing often can’t. English has become the scientific language of the 21st century. Grammar and vocabulary are not the only challenges for non-native speakers of English. They also have to satisfy the peer-reviewers’ and readers’ expectations when they want to publish their results. And for their academic careers, they have to publish.
Aim/Where to?
This workshop focuses on the language aspects of getting scientific papers published. It concentrates in particular on supporting scientists who are not native English speakers. It will enable the participants to move a step forward in thinking about the reader perspective, producing well-written research and getting it published.
The workshop investigates the following topics:
  • The writing process
  • Finding a message and story-line for a paper
  • Style and structure of abstracts, papers, paragraphs and sentences
  • Mistakes commonly made in academic writing
  • English punctuation
  • Academic vocabulary
  • Supportive internet tools for writing
  • Journal analysis and what reviewers are looking for
  • Native speaker papers and what can be learnt from them
  • Improving/editing a text
This workshop will be conducted entirely in English. It is based on active participation and practical exercises. The participants are expected to contribute to the discussion and to bring to the workshop a short English text about their research for some of the exercises. Although any grammar questions brought up during the workshop will be discussed, the module does not cover basic English grammar in detail.
