Digitalization at the University of Bonn

Shaping digital transformation together!

Our university is actively driving forward digital transformation. With our clear digital strategy, we are creating innovative learning environments across our faculties, optimising administrative processes and strengthening our position as pioneers in research and teaching. Find out more about how we are shaping the digital future of our university.

Current digitalization news

Gentle nudges for increased animal welfare
Gentle purchase incentives can lead customers to choose groceries with higher animal husbandry standards more often. A recent study at the University of Bonn at least suggests this. The researchers used two different animal welfare label posters as “nudges.” Each poster itself changed the consumer behavior of participants shopping in a virtual supermarket. The share of products with higher animal welfare standards in the shopping cart was highest when both posters were combined. Further studies have yet to clarify the extent to which the results can be transferred to real shopping situations. The study has been published in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics.
International Perspectives on AI in Higher Education
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a key factor in higher education, opening up new possibilities for learning, teaching and examinations while also leaving universities grappling with fundamental strategic, ethical and organizational questions. Hosted by the University of Bonn from June 10 to 12, 2026, the annual summit of the Global Universities for Societal Impact (GUSI) international network focused on how higher-education institutions can shape this change responsibly. Representatives from the five partner universities debated how AI is transforming research and teaching and what answers higher-education institutions need to find to address these trends.
From the Rhine to the Tropics
Using a low-cost sensor and the Global Navigation Satellite System Interferometric Reflectometry (GNSS-IR), river water levels can be monitored around the clock. The water level data are automatically transmitted via cellular networks to an analysis center. Researchers at the University of Bonn developed the method several years ago and tested it on the Lower Rhine. With support from the European Space Agency (ESA), the monitoring system is now also being used in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region.
What AI Actually Does in Diffusion Models
In the search for new drugs, artificial intelligence in the form of diffusion models is being used in drug design. What exactly does AI do in this context? Dr. Andrea Mastropietro and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Bajorath from Life Science Informatics at the University of Bonn and the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence have investigated this.

“For me, digitalization means the opportunity to gain new insights using new methods and to share them. In research, it opens up new horizons; in teaching, it enables encounters and exchanges even across continents. That inspires me every day anew.”

Prof. Dr. Maren Bennewitz
Vice Rector for Digitalization and Information Management

Steps toward our digital transformation

All activities, measures, and objectives are detailed in the digital strategy and are continuously developed in an ongoing process.
We are tackling the challenges of digital transformation in seven areas:

  • Research and teaching
  • Knowledge transfer and society
  • Legal framework and security
  • Infrastructure
  • Organizational structure
  • Digital skills
  • New spaces
