Binational Doctoral Studies (cotutelle de thèse)


Bi-national doctoral studies within the framework of a so-called cotutelle de thèse will be supported both by a German as well as by an international university under an individual cooperation agreement. The advising universities award a joint degree. Bi- und trinational Doctoral Studies within the Context of Structured Doctoral Studies Programs


The following University of Bonn doctoral programs systematically offer bi- or tri-national doctoral degrees:




German-Italian PhD College [in German]

The bi-national Kolleg in German provides structured PhD studies for German and Italian PhD students with phases spent at the University of Bonn and at the partner university in Florence. There are 1-2 grants/year.



Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programme "Philosophies européennes contemporaines"

The Erasmus Mundus PhD program in cooperation with the Universities of Padua, Louvain, Toulouse, and the École Normale Supérieur in Paris focuses on the European philosophical canon of the 19th and 20th centuries.



Trinational Doctoral College "Masses and Integration in Antique Societies" [in German and French] 

Supported by the Deutsch-Französische Hochschule since 2011, the tri-national Graduate School in Ancient History offers curriculum events in Bonn, Berne, and Strasbourg.



Trinational PhD Program in Italian Studies [in German and Italian]

In cooperation with the Universities of Florence and Paris-Sorbonne IV, the University of Bonn has been offering a PhD studies program in Italian Studies (admission restrictions apply) since 2006.



Trinational Doctoral College "European Founding Myths in Literature, Arts, and Music" [in German, Italian and French]

The Graduate School, which is jointly organized by the Universities of Bonn, Florence and Paris Sorbonne IV, allows inter-disciplinary PhD studies focusing on the topic of European founding myths.
