The eight largest Academies of Sciences together form the Union der der deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaft.
Once a year, the latter announces the Academies' Programme for implementing long-term research projects.
The academy programs available in NRW are located at the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts at Düsseldorf.
Offerings for junior scholars
The NRW Academy also offers junior scholars a unique support option through its Junge Kolleg (no English information provided). Invitations take place once a year.
The offers the Leopoldina Fellowship Programme for junior scientists.
The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) offers a wide range of funding options for students, and to a lesser extent, also for scholars.

Programs for scientists

It includes programms for scientists from outside germany as well as for German scientists.

AXA Research Fund
The AXA Research Fund is an international funding body domiciled in Paris.
Funding is provided for basic research in three areas:
- Life risks
- Socio-economic risks
- Environmental risks
Calls are published for some funding schemes, for others researchers have to be nominated by the "Search Committees".

- Outlooks and Joint Research Initiatives (nomination by Search Committees)
Application for Chairs and Post-doctoral Fellowships must by submitteb by the host institution. The application process is devided into differnet steps.
Human Frontier Science Program
The Human Frontier Science Program funds research into complex biological systems.
Germany is one of the program's partner countries. Researchers from Germany or those who want to come to Germany can participate in all funding programs offered.
The following programs are offered, which provide funding for three years:
- Postdoctoral Fellowships
The program is devided into "Long Term Fellowships" for applicants form biological disciplines and "Cross Disciplinary Fellowships" for applicants from outside the life sciences.
- Career Development Awards (only for former fellows)
- Research Grants
The these cooperation projects a distinction is made between "Young Investigators' Grants" for scientest holding their first independent research position and "Program Grants" for researchers of all career stages.
