Research Data Management

One-day workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center on November 8, 2018, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., in the University Library, Schulungsraum (training room), Abteilungsbibliothek MNL, Nußallee 15a

This is an introductory course on managing digital Research Data. Please be aware that within the limits of this course, specific issues around individual projects cannot be addressed.

The term ‘Research Data’ describes all types of data that is collected, observed or created throughout a research project from planning to publication with the aim to produce and validate original research results. Funding institutions and policy makers are placing an ever growing importance on the competent management of these resources. As considerable funds and effort are put into producing research data, Data Management Plans are an increasingly requested requirement to ensure the deliberate handling of the gathered information throughout the whole Data Lifecycle. Digital long-term archiving, professional documentation and a preferably unconfined publication aim at facilitating re-usage by oneself as well as others.

In this course Research Data Management basics are explained. This includes the following topics:

  • What are Research Data?
  • Data Management Plans
  • Organising Data
  • File Formats and Transformation
  • Documentation, Metadata and Citation
  • Storage and Security
  • Data Protection, Rights, and Access
  • Sharing, Preservation, and Licensing
