ROOTS – Cultivating Sustainability Together
ROOTS is a new program that builds on our CampusAckerdemie, expanding its scope and impact. Focusing on sustainable food systems, the program empowers students – especially future teachers – to translate research into real-world action.
Through hands-on learning on campus fields, service learning with schools and community partners, and independent research projects, students acquire practical skills, critical reflection, and key “Future Skills” such as systems thinking, adaptability, and collaboration. By promoting sustainable food practices, raising awareness of nutrition and consumption habits, and fostering dialogue with civic partners, ROOTS amplifies the societal impact of university research.
The program positions the University of Bonn as a leader in interdisciplinary, practice-oriented sustainability education that drives meaningful change within the university and across communities.
ROOTS is a central component of the Bonn Program for Sustainability Transformation (BOOST), our university’s own sustainability program. ROOTS contributes to all areas of action in our sustainability strategy – research, teaching, operations, participation and student engagement, as well as communication and transfer – and is based on a whole-institution approach.
