Campaign Month "Sustainable September"
The University of Bonn invites all its members to take part in the many varied initiatives and events about sustainability as well as to come up with ideas for own campaigns.
Sustainable September 2024 - Program
City Cycling 2024
Cycling to work or the campus on a good-weather day is double the fun in Sustainable September!
In the campaign event CITY CYCLING 2024, from September 2-22, you can rack up kilometers cycled to help the University team defend its title from last year.
During this 21-day period the goal is to maximize climate-friendly bicycle use for wherever it is you need to go. Whether you already cycle every day or only relatively rarely is irrelevant, because every kilometer counts—particularly if you would otherwise have taken the car.
Together we can promote bicycle mobility as a great way to further sustainability!
Register at stadtradeln.de using the City Cycling app to become part of the University of Bonn team.
CITY CYCLING is supported by Healthy Campus Bonn, University Sports and the University of Bonn Team N (N for “Nachhaltigkeit” or “sustainability”).
RhineCleanUp
Enormous amounts of waste end up in rivers every year.
Plastic bottles, cigarette butts and other kinds of trash are harmful to nature and our own health, which is why the University of Bonn will again be participating in the RhineCleanUp event this year. All staff and students are invited to get involved, and bring along their family members!
Working together, we intend to clear all trash from the banks of the Rhine. The aim is to raise awareness that trash should not be thoughtlessly discarded, ideally avoiding its accumulation in the first place.
When: Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 10 am to 2 pm
Meeting point: “Beueler Bahnhöfchen” restaurant, Rheinaustraße 116, 53225 Bonn
We will be providing gloves, “garbage grabbers” and trash bags, but feel free to bring any gloves and equipment you already have.
Prior registration not required.
We look forward to seeing you there!
INRES Too Good to Go to Waste
Germany is saving food and WE are joining in! On September 20th, there will be free potatoes, apples, and information on the topic of food waste.
The event will take place at the location of the potato cabinet (INRES) at Auf dem Hügel 6.
From 12 PM to 5 PM, delicious organic potatoes (called "Drillinge") from the university's own organic experimental farm "Wiesengut" will be available. Please bring a bag. The so-called "Drillinge" are small potatoes that are sorted out as waste during harvest. Preparing them for sale would be too labor-intensive. Of course, they are "too good for the bin" and are usually fed to the farm's own cows. Available only while supplies last!
From 12 PM to 5 PM, apples can be picked in the orchard meadows in the garden of the Chair. Instead of ending up on the ground, the apples may find their way onto a delicious cake or as applesauce in the first autumn dishes.
Additionally, on this day, a "scythe course" will take place on the grounds of the Chair, where participants will learn the safe and proper use of a scythe. They will also learn about the benefits of alternative mowing with a scythe. Visitors are welcome to watch.
We look forward to seeing you!
When? September 20, 2024 From 12 noon – 5 pm
Where? Agroecology and Organic Farming Group and Chair of Horticulture, Auf dem Hügel 6, 53121 Bonn
“Too good to go to waste!” is part of the National Strategy for Food Waste Reduction devised by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
GreenScreen
Green Screen* is returning after summer break!
The next GreenScreen film event is coming up on September 25 as part of a series of specially selected films accompanied by a talk by researchers whose work concerns aspects of sustainability.
This time around the feature film will be “The Salt of the Earth,” a documentary of the life and work of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. An introduction to the documentary will be given by Professor Eva Nöthen and Gabriel Bohn of the Department of Geography.
When: Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at 6 pm
Where: Kino in der Brotfabrik cinema, Kreuzstraße 16, 53225 Bonn-Beuel
A talk will be held after watching the film together in the Brotfabrik, and we encourage everyone in the audience to join in the discussion, as engaging in dialogue is most important.
Tickets are available from Bonner Kinemathek.
GreenScreen is a film event held six times a year at Kino in der Brotfabrik (a cinema in an old bread baking factory), organized by the University of Bonn Team N (N for “Nachhaltigkeit” or “sustainability”) in partnership with Bonner Kinemathek and the Brotfabrik Bonn cultural center.
