Global Exchange Program
This moment made me feel very welcome
Prince is studying Chemistry at University of GHana in Ghana and reports on their time as an exchange student at the University of Bonn.
I chose to participate in the Global Exchange Program at the University of Bonn because I wanted to experience a different academic environment and learn how chemistry is taught and researched in Germany. As a graduate student pursuing an MPhil in Chemistry at the University of Ghana, I was particularly interested in expanding my academic perspective and interacting with international researchers. I received most of the information needed to prepare for my stay through the International Office and the Global Exchange Program materials. These resources helped me understand the application process, travel preparation, and academic opportunities available at the University of Bonn.
My first experience in Germany began at Frankfurt Airport, where I initially struggled to navigate my way to Bonn with my luggage. Fortunately, a kind traveler helped me buy my train ticket and guided me to the correct train. This moment made me feel very welcome in Germany. When I arrived in Bonn, the International Office provided great support and arranged my accommodation in a student dormitory. I lived with three flat mates from different cultural backgrounds, which made my stay even more interesting. The accommodation process was smooth and stress-free thanks to the university's assistance.
During my exchange semester at the University of Bonn, I attended lectures in organic and inorganic chemistry, did an internship in the Luetzen Lab, and enrolled in a German language course (A1.1). I chose these courses because they complemented my background in chemistry and broadened my academic knowledge while introducing me to the basics of the German language. One of the biggest differences between the University of Bonn and my home university was the intensity and atmosphere of research. Research activities were very active and collaborative, and the environment made studying chemistry both exciting and enjoyable. Professors and research groups were open, approachable, and always willing to discuss ideas. I also had the chance to interact with other students during classes and research discussions, which helped me build connections and learn from different perspectives.
Life in Bonn was very pleasant and culturally enriching. The people were friendly and welcoming, and I always felt comfortable interacting with them. Before coming to Germany, I had heard concerns about racial discrimination, but during my entire stay, I never experienced anything like that. Instead, people were kind and willing to help whenever I needed assistance. I also found German culture very interesting, especially the way holidays and festivals are celebrated with great respect and enthusiasm. People spend time with their families and loved ones, which creates a strong sense of community. Outside the University, I enjoyed exploring different cities such as Cologne, Kassel, and Euskirchen. One small challenge I initially faced was understanding the public transportation system operated by Deutsche Bahn. At first, I boarded the wrong buses because I was shy to ask for help, but I later realized that asking questions makes life much easier.
Overall, my exchange semester at the University of Bonn was a very rewarding and memorable experience. Academically, it strengthened my interest in chemistry and exposed me to a dynamic research environment. Personally, it allowed me to experience a new culture and meet people from many different backgrounds. If I could do anything differently, I would try to learn a little more German before arriving in Germany and ask questions more confidently when I need help. My advice to future exchange students is to stay open-minded, interact with people, and take advantage of every opportunity to learn both academically and culturally. This experience has inspired me to continue seeking international opportunities in the future.
