Sophia Piacenza
Sophia Piacenza, a mathematics student, is committed to promoting gender equality within the Mathematics Department; she served as co-chair of the department’s Gender Equality Working Group, advocates for raising awareness of gender equality and diversity, and developed an interactive training program for mathematics tutors to support these efforts. The award of the Maria von Linden Prize by the University of Bonn’s Office for Gender Equality has now brought Piacenza to We Are Uni Bonn.
Networking is the way
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Sophia Piacenza has been organizing “Teatime for Flintas” along with many other events. Role models are invited, experienced mentors give talks, and participants learn more about each other and exchange ideas. Sophia Piacenza, a mathematics student, is very proud that she and her supporters and like-minded individuals have already organized more than 20 Teatimes, “so that things get better for everyone.”

If everyone can be there
...that’s when excellence emerges, says Sophia Piacenza: “When everyone can give their best and isn’t held back by discrimination, harassment, or similar issues, then excellence becomes possible.”
