Our laboratory investigates the importance of mitochondria and chromatin remodelling in metabolic syndromes, aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. We assess molecular mechanisms that determine organismal responsiveness to environmental and genetic cues. In this regard, we study the epigenetic landscape that promotes lifespan-extending programs and associated metabolic adaptations. We investigate replication-independent histone variants and their contribution to the formation of transcriptionally permissive chromatin underlying longevity of multicellular organisms. Another line of research focuses on the ATP-dependent chromatin remodelling complexes and their influence in the transcriptional regulation of metabolic genes required for cell stemness and cell lineage commitment. Ultimately, we wish to develop a translational framework for the identification of molecular targets and/or compounds clinically relevant as disease modifiers.
