Professor Valentin S. Schäfer ist Leiter der Sektion Rheumatologie an der Medizinischen Klinik III des Universitätsklinikums Bonn und W2-Professor für Point-of-care-Bildgebung inflammatorischer Prozesse an der Universität Bonn. Zudem leitet er das Vaskulitis Zentrum West, das Psoriasis-Arthritis-Zentrum Bonn und die rheumatologische Studienambulanz. Nach dem Medizinstudium an der Karls-Universität Prag, das er als bester Medizinstudent seines Jahrgangs abschloss, promovierte er summa cum laude an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Seine klinische Ausbildung absolvierte er in Erlangen, Regensburg und Berlin; anschließend war er Oberarzt am Universitätsklinikum Mainz. Seit 2018 leitet er die Rheumatologie am Universitätsklinikum Bonn. Wissenschaftliche Stationen führten ihn u. a. an die Mayo Clinic Rochester, USA. Seine Schwerpunkte sind translationale Rheumatologie, Immunologie und moderne Bildgebung bei Vaskulitiden und Arthritiden.
