Our work is focussing on spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) which are a genetically heterogeneous group of autosomal dominantly inherited progressive ataxia diseases. The clinical hallmark of all SCAs is loss of balance and coordination accompanied by slurred speech with an onset in adult life. The underlying pathology is progressive degeneration of the cerebellum, brainstem and spinal cord. In our research, we take a translational approach with the final goal to contribute to the development of effective therapies that directly target the disease genes. Our specific expertise includes assessment of functional capacity with digital technologies, advanced brain imaging, as well as development and validation of fluid biomarkers.
