The research of my group aims at understanding how protective immunity is achieved on molecular and cellular levels. We focus on how self and foreign signals are sensed by the immune system and transmitted within and between cells to orchestrate context specific immune reactions. We address our research questions systems-wide on the level of proteins, which are key in transmitting intra- and intercellular signals, by employing a unique combination of cellular immunology, biochemistry, mass spectrometry-based proteomics, and systems biology: To this end, we develop and apply unbiased protein-centric discovery tools. We devise computational strategies to obtain holistic views of immune functions and to discover proteins or protein modifications with key roles in intra- and intercellular signaling. We generate testable hypothesis and investigate the molecular mechanisms of the discovered leads with a range of cellular, molecular, biochemical, biophysical as well as immunological methods.
