Far beyond the legal sphere

Law is often merely the craft of rule-making and rule-application, says Prof. Dr. Gregor Thüsing, a member of the German Ethics Council. Laws are valid, Thüsing says, because the legislature wills them, and courts dictate how they are to be understood and applied. Good laws, however, only emerge when they consider conflicting interests and are guided by values that are important to society. What are these values? How are they implemented? The Ethics Council helps find answers to these questions, says Thüsing. "Discourse is needed—far beyond the realm of law."
