The Study-Buddy Program for buddies

You have been studying at the University of Bonn for at least one semester? You live in (the area of) Bonn, know the ins and outs of the University and the area and would like to get involved? You are outgoing and would like to help international students find their way around starting university and feel welcome during their stay in Bonn?

If your answer to the above is “yes”, register now for the Study-Buddy Program!

Who can participate?

In principle, each student of the University of Bonn – regardless of the target degree – can participate. However, you should already have completed at least one semester at the University of Bonn and have good command of both German and English.

What should I be able to offer?

  • Interest in international student exchange
  • An outgoing personality
  • Good German and English language skills
  • Time and willingness to support an international student for one semester (especially prior to the semester start and during the first weeks of the semester)

What does the Study-Buddy Program offer me?

  • Mingling with international students and other buddies
  • Written confirmation of your volunteer work
  • Earning of credits for the Certificate of International Competence
  • Firsthand information about your future country of study or partner university (where applicable)
  • Preparing of or following up on your own stay abroad (where applicable)
  • Improving your language skills
  • Participating in joint activities of the Study-Buddy Program
  • Forming of long-term international friendships

What are my responsibilities as a buddy?

Contact with mentee:

  • Reaching out to your mentee as soon as we have provided you with the contact details.
  • Arranging a personal get-together once your mentee has arrived in Bonn.
  • Being available for questions.
  • Discussing expectations and agreeing with your mentee on ground rules for your contact. Making sure that your mentee knows that he/she can reach out to you at any time.

Life in Bonn (if necessary):

  • Picking up your mentee at the airport or train station
  • Hunting for a room in Bonn
  • Helping with your mentee’s move into the dormitory of the Studierendenwerk, shared flat, etc. (e.g. support with rental contract, handing over of keys, move-in, flea markets for second-hand furniture and household utensils)
  • Opening a bank account
  • Accompanying your mentee to appointments with authorities (e.g. local registry office (Einwohnermeldeamt), International Office, health insurance)
  • Tips for everyday life (public transport, shops, landline, cell phone, internet, culture, etc.)
  • Including your mentee in student social life (visits to the International Club, parties, cooking, excursions, cinema, pubs, etc.)

Studying in Bonn (if necessary):

  • Enrolling at the Student Registry
  • Getting to know the University of Bonn: buildings and (lecture) halls, libraries, International Office, University canteen, University sports, copy procedures, etc.
  • Registering for courses
  • Registering for (written) examinations
  • Registering for University sports, etc.

When are buddies needed?

Buddies are mostly needed for the period between the end of August and beginning of October (winter semester) and the period between the end of February and beginning of April (summer semester).

When and how can I apply?

  • Summer semester: January 01 to April 30
  • Winter semester: July 01 to November 15

In order to register, please complete the online application form on Mobility Online. Here you can find a detailed instruction on how to register on the Mobility-Online portal.

How do I get written confirmation of my volunteer work?

Following your successful participation in the Study-Buddy Program, we will issue a written confirmation of your completed volunteer work. To be able to do so, please fill out the feedback form on Mobility Online once you are done participating. You can then download the confirmation from Mobility Online.

How can I obtain credit for the Certificate of International Competence?

Your participation in the Study-Buddy Program and the written confirmation count towards your Certificate of International Competence (credit for the C) Ambassador Component). 10 points per 1 semester of volunteering.
