In talks with the President of Waseda University, Professor Dr. Aiji Tanaka, the Rector supported plans for a joint third-party funded project between the Life and Medical Sciences Institute (LIMES Institute) in Bonn and the Center for Advanced Biomedical Sciences (TWIns) in Tokyo. "A successful initiative of this kind will further promote the cooperation with our strategic partner Waseda and give it a stable structure in the field of life sciences for years to come," said the Rector after intensive discussions in which the delegation from the LIMES Institute, professors Andreas Schlitzer, Elvira Mass, Dietmar Schmucker and Irmgard Förster ?participated.

Waseda University is historically one of the most important universities in Japan and can claim the writer Haruki Murakami and the former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori as its alumni. Based on Waseda Vision 150 - the university's strategic plan for development up to its 150th anniversary in 2032 - it is currently considered one of the most dynamic Japanese universities. In 2020, the universities of Bonn and Waseda will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their partnership. The extraordinarily consistent and lively cooperation will then be honoured in a joint ceremony.

In addition to talks with Waseda University, Rector Hoch used his visit to Japan as an opportunity to network more closely with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Prof. Hoch met the president of the Japanese funding organization, Prof. Dr. Michinari Hamaguchi, and visited the German Science and Innovation House Tokyo (DWIH), in which the University of Bonn intends to participate as an associated supporter in the future.
