Sustainability in Practice: Mowing Lawns with Scythes Sustainability in Practice: Mowing Lawns with Scythes

Scythe courses are teaching University members useful knowledge about how to care for green spaces in an environmentally friendly way.

For the first time, students and staff were given the opportunity to take part in a scythe course organized by the Institute of Crop Science and Resource Conservation (INRES) at the University’s very own Wiesengut research farm on the Siegaue, where they successfully mastered use of the implement.

Scythe courses are now being offered at the University of Bonn.

Using a scythe to cut grass is much kinder on the environment than a conventional mower. As well as generating no emissions and barely any noise, scything can boost the development of diverse plant ecosystems. The scythe courses enabled participants to do their bit to make the University a more sustainable place while helping to conserve biodiversity in Bonn.

The courses are being funded from the University’s own sustainability funding pot.
