Global Exchange Program
My advice is to embrace every opportunity
Joshua is studying Agribusiness at University of Ghana and reports on their time as an exchange student at the University of Bonn.
I chose to participate in the Global Exchange Program at the University of Bonn because I wanted to gain international exposure in an academic environment that is both welcoming to international students and renowned for its high-quality education. I learned about this opportunity through the International Program Office at the University of Ghana, which sent out a call for applications via our University email. The application process was straightforward, and I received the necessary guidance on visa applications, accommodation, and course registration.
Upon my arrival in Bonn, I was warmly welcomed by the university’s international office, which provided useful information about settling in. I stayed in a student accommodation managed by the Studierendenwerk, located at Am Bleichgraben. My apartment was a self-contained single unit with all essential amenities, offering a calm and serene environment. The view from my window was stunning, overlooking a well-maintained lawn, which added to the overall comfort of my stay. Adjusting to my new environment was smooth, thanks to the supportive student community and the well-organized university orientation program.
When selecting my courses, I focused on subjects relevant to my thesis on food security. I enrolled in Food Security and Sustainable Food Systems to deepen my understanding of global food challenges and Environmental Economics and Policy, which provided insights into policy brief development. One of the major differences between the University of Bonn and my home university was the curriculum structure, particularly in food security. The courses were highly research-based, integrating contemporary global issues, which significantly enhanced my analytical and problem-solving skills. Moreover, the diverse student body made my academic experience even more enriching. I connected with students from various backgrounds, including Germany, Iran, China, Russia, and other African countries. Engaging in discussions with peers from different cultural perspectives broadened my worldview and enriched my academic journey. The transport system in Bonn is highly efficient and well-structured, making it easy for students to navigate the city and beyond. Buses, trains, and trams are widely available, ensuring smooth and timely commutes. As a student, I had access to a semester ticket, which allowed me to travel freely within North Rhine-Westphalia.
Life in Bonn was vibrant and filled with opportunities to engage with both locals and other international students. I frequently attended International Club events, which were great for meeting people and experiencing different cultures. Generally, I found people in Bonn to be very friendly and open-minded. The city's culture is a blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy, with numerous museums, theaters, and art exhibitions to explore. Outdoor enthusiasts would enjoy the scenic Rhine River, which is perfect for walks or boat tours. Additionally, Bonn's well-connected transport system made it easy to explore neighbouring cities like Cologne.
In conclusion, my time abroad was a transformative experience. I am extremely satisfied with my exchange program and would highly recommend it to other students seeking international exposure. If I were to do anything differently, I would have planned my travels earlier to explore more of Germany and Europe. For future exchange students, my advice is to embrace every opportunity—attend social events, interact with people from different cultures, and make the most of academic resources. Also, learning some basic German phrases can be helpful for everyday interactions.
