Ancient Greek and Latin Literature and its Tradition
The degree program involves linguistics and literature and focuses on reading Greek and Latin texts from antiquity (in two languages where appropriate) and interpreting them. Although prior knowledge of Latin or Greek is not a formal requirement for the minor, it is strongly recommended. Students interpret the texts within their historical and cultural context, which mainly includes the aspects of history and society, literary history, mythology, religion and philosophy.
An interest in and enthusiasm for ancient literature are the most important prerequisites for a successful study of Greek and Latin philology. Studying the texts that have done much to shape the European tradition of intellectual history will also help students to develop an understanding of the present. Aside from studying ancient literature, another main focus at the University of Bonn is its reception. The teaching combines traditional textual analysis with approaches drawn from modern literary theory.
This subject must be combined with a second subject.
