Studying at Two Universities.

Cross-Registered Students

Students enrolled at other German universities who are not on a leave of absence can apply to be admitted as cross-registered students. This entitles them to attend individual courses and take program-related examinations.

Partial cross-registration

You are entitled to take program-related examinations if you meet the admission requirements set out in the examination regulations for your chosen examination (“partial cross-registered students”). Partial cross-registered students are requested to report to the competent department before taking part in courses (apart from lectures).

However, this does not apply to courses that have to limit participant numbers due to their nature or purpose or for other reasons. In these situations, participation will require permission from the course organizer. If this is the case, please use the annex to the application for cross-registration.

For courses forming part of master’s degree programs, the competent examination office must first give its approval by confirming that the necessary enrollment conditions for the particular degree program have been met. If this is the case, please use the annex to the application for cross-registration.

Details

Responsibility for recognizing courses attended and credits earned will always lie with the university at which the student in question is enrolled as a regular student and is to take their final examination.

Partial cross-registered students are not enrolled. They become members of the University community for the duration of their admission without being members of the University proper, meaning that they do not receive a student transit pass either.

For courses on the Human Medicine degree program, you will also need to be approved and assigned to a group by the office of the dean of studies in the Faculty of Medicine.

You can only take part in courses that form part of a program-related semester with restricted admission for a particular academic discipline if this has been approved by the relevant university professor in advance.

Students at other universities who are entitled to take part in events at the University of Bonn as partial cross-registered students under a university partnership are usually exempt from the cross-registration fee and do not need proof of their status. Please contact the subject-specific study advisory service for the relevant degree program if you have any questions.

Applying for partial cross-registration

You can apply to the Student Registry for cross-registration using the corresponding form, enclosing an up-to-date certificate of enrollment at the university where you are enrolled as a regular student. A semester fee will not be charged and cannot be paid voluntarily either, meaning that you will not receive a student transit pass. Partial cross-registration costs EUR 100 per semester.

Deadline for re-registration for full cross-registration: for a winter semester, September 30 and for a summer semester, March 31.

Full cross-registration

Cross-registered students can also be admitted to and enrolled on an additional degree program if the criteria set out in the enrollment regulations are met (“full cross-registered students”); in particular, a letter of admission must be submitted for subjects with restricted admission. In this case, your cross-registration will also allow you to record your academic achievements, fulfill admission requirements for examinations and obtain credit points.

You will only be entitled to pursue an additional degree program as a cross-registered student if you provide evidence of your initial enrollment at another university. Before granting its approval, the University may request evidence of a meaningful and practicable study schedule for pursuing two degree programs in different locations at the same time in the form of expert statements from the subject-specific study advisors responsible for the respective program.

Applying for full cross-registration

You can apply to the Student Registry for cross-registration using the enrollment form, enclosing an up-to-date certificate of enrollment at the university where you are enrolled as a regular student as well as approval from the subject-specific study advisors at your first and second universities. You do not need to pay the semester fee and will not receive a student transit pass.
