Temporary detour signage is up

The core renovation of the former Electoral Palace has commenced, as project manager BLB NRW, the building and real estate management agency of North Rhine-Westphalia, has started preparatory work to set up an interim auditorium in the area of the underground parking garage. Cyclists and pedestrians will still have open routes to the city center and the Rhine at all times during the construction project.

The core renovation is necessary to preserve the University of Bonn Main Building, which is a historic monument, throughout decades to come as a prestigious site for higher education. BLB NRW has started preparatory work by renewing the sealing of the underground parking garage in relevant areas. This will involve the excavation of a construction trench approximately 4.5 meters deep to gain access to the affected ceiling and wall surfaces of the garage. Construction access roads have already been set up at the site.

The underground parking garage is located between the University Main Building and the Hofgarten lawn. A key pedestrian and bicycle route between Bonn city center and the Rhine, Regina-Pacis-Weg crosses this area, as the immediate extension of Poppelsdorfer Allee over the Kaiserplatz.

Temporary path alongside the construction site
To ensure safe working and keep the route open, BLB NRW has created a temporary, lighted bike path and walkway along the Hofgarten lawn. The path starts at the entrance of the underground parking garage near the Stockentor passage and ends at the garage exit at Kaiserplatz. The bike path and walkway are separated from the construction site access road by solid construction fencing. Signage is in place indicating the detour for bicycle traffic. Pedestrians and cyclists are requested to stay on the designated route and stay out of the construction site.
