As a member of the University Council, Helmut Schwarz dedicated himself to furthering the University of Bonn’s fortunes between 2010 and 2025. With his experience, his strategic foresight and his wise counsel, he supported the University management at a key stage of its development—during a period that notably included the University’s outstanding successes in the Excellence Strategy.
Professor Schwarz has revealed that he is deeply moved by the honor, which he will have great pleasure in accepting. His honorary doctorate will be officially conferred on October 19, 2026, during the ceremonial opening of the 2026/27 academic year at the University of Bonn.
Helmut Schwarz studied chemistry at Technische Universität Berlin, obtaining his doctorate in 1972 and his Habilitation in 1974. After several research visits, including at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge, he was appointed to a professorship at Technische Universität Berlin in 1978, becoming its Professor for Organic Chemistry five years later. To this day, his main research interests straddle the boundaries between molecular chemistry, catalysis and physical organic chemistry.
Schwarz’s research into the activation of stable molecules, metal-mediated bond activation and gas-phase reactions has won him particular recognition. He has also made important contributions to advancing the field of mass spectrometry and explaining fundamental steps in catalytic processes, and his research has set new benchmarks in our understanding of chemical reactivity.
His work has had a lasting impact on basic research in chemistry and done much to shine a light on molecular reaction mechanisms, gas-phase chemistry and mass spectrometry.
Schwarz has won numerous scientific and academic awards. Among other accolades, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, was a founding member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and its Vice-President from 1998 to 2003, and served as a Vice President of the German Research Foundation (DFG) between 2001 and 2007. He was also President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation from 2008 until 2017.
