2030 Internationalization Strategy
Internationalization is a key element in the overall orientation and development planning of the University of Bonn. It is aiming to retain its strong international flavor and continue to drive forward its process of internationalization.
Internationalization objectives and action areas between now and 2030
We firmly believe that internationalization contributes substantially to realizing further quality and competitiveness gains across all areas of activity at the University of Bonn. Building on this firm belief, we are aiming to embed internationalization even more closely in our research, teaching, learning and administration by 2030.
At the heart of our strategy for 2030 is our intention to recruit outstanding international researchers and students, offer them an ideal environment for research, study and teaching at the University, and gear them up for the requirements of a competitive global science and job market.
Within this overarching intention, we have identified six areas of action for internationalization, each of which has its own set of objectives.
Because we see internationalization as a task for our entire community in organizational terms, we have identified overarching measures that will serve to achieve all our objectives. Some of these measures will be taken by central units (Vice Rectorate and International Office) and others by decentralized ones (faculties and inter-faculty organizational units).
Action areas
- The strategic internationalization of excellent research
- The targeted internationalization of teaching and learning
- A strong framework for internationalization
- The continued development of strategic partnerships and networks
- The internationalization of partnerships in the international city of Bonn and its surrounding area
- Institutional resilience in global and multipolar crises
Successful implementation of these measures in the years to 2025 has helped the University of Bonn to remain excellent, an achievement that would not have been possible without our many international networks.
Its strategy for 2025 and the over 200 individual actions that it contained have helped to drive the University of Bonn’s across-the-board transformation into a fully international university, something that it will continue to do with the aid of the measures and objectives outlined here. At the same time, a number of new objectives have been identified and are included in the 2030 Internationalization Strategy.
“Internationalization of Universities” re-audit by the HRK
The University of Bonn passed the “Internationalization of Universities” audit by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) in 2017 as well as its corresponding re-audit in 2024, during which the auditors called the University’s strategic internationalization efforts from 2018 to 2024 an “impressive success story.”
Internationalization guidelines
Supplementing its overarching strategy for 2030, the University of Bonn has set out its position on various facets of its internationalization in several sets of topic-specific guidelines.
