Veranstaltung:,Desirable Futures: Interdisciplinary Perspectives'
International experts discuss possible and probable futures, and the challenges we face in making these futures desirable. Participants will speak across disciplines to consider ethics, artificial intelligence and resilience among other topics. At each session, a succinct lead presentation will be followed by several specialist commentaries, setting the scene for a substantial, free and open discussion. This is a rare opportunity to engage with globally leading thinkers in the field of futures. The event will be held in English. Am 24. Oktober 2022 wird das von Professor Christiane Woopen, Hertz-Chair TRA 4, gegründete Center for Life Ethics und das Haus für junges Denken mit einem Festakt offiziell eröffnet. Wir freuen uns, Herrn Ministerpräsidenten des Landes NRW Hendrik Wüst und Frau Oberbürgermeisterin Katja Dörner begrüßen zu dürfen und die Frage „Wie schauen wir auf das Leben?“ mit allen Fakultäten zu diskutieren. Ringvorlesung: DenkReise WS22/23: Wohin wollen wir leben?
Die „DenkReise“ lädt Studierende und Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen ein, gedanklich zu neuen Ufern aufzubrechen und neue Ideen für eine ethisch fundierte Gestaltung von Zukünften unterschiedlicher gesellschaftlicher Bereiche zu entwickeln. Im Haus für junges Denken des Center for Life Ethics stellen ausgewiesene Expert:innen unterschiedlicher Fachrichtungen ihre Forschung und ihre Ideen zur Diskussion. Zum Abschluss reisen wir ins Futurium nach Berlin. An der DenkReise können alle Interessierten teilnehmen; eine finanzielle Unterstützung für Zugfahrt und Übernachtung nach Berlin ins Futurium steht von der TRA 4 für 25 Teilnehmende zur Verfügung. Vollständiger Titel: ‚Künste – Agonismus – Konvivialität: Analysen im Anschluss an Marcel Mauss‘ Eine Anmeldung per E-Mail ist nicht erforderlich! Der Essai sur le don. Forme et raison de l’échange dans les sociétés archaïques (Die Gabe. Form und Funktion des Austauschs in archaischen Gesellschaften) des französischen Ethnologen und Soziologen Marcel Mauss synthetisiert eine Fülle verschiedener Forschungen. Der Text von 1923/24 ist dicht, hochkomplex und widersprüchlich. Nicht zuletzt verbinden sich darin zwei nicht leicht zu vereinbarende Perspektiven: eine des Studiums, im weitesten Sinn, ‚vormoderner‘ Gesellschaften und eine der Analyse zeitgenössischer Verhältnisse.

Tagung: 'Erinnerung im Zeichen von Ambiguitätstoleranz'
Erinnerungspolitik ist Arbeit an der Vergangenheit um einer gemeinsamen Zukunft willen. Sie ist entwicklungsoffen und kontrovers, sie wird erstritten und manchmal erkämpft. Wenn sie jedoch einen Beitrag zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit Ideologien, mit vergangenen und gegenwärtigen Menschheitsverbrechen und diversen Identitätskonstruktionen leisten will, dann muss sie reflexiv sein. Eine solche Reflexivität „lebt“ von der Fähigkeit zur Reziprozität der Perspektiven. Wir bitten um vorherige Anmeldung. Die Anzahl der Plätze ist beschränkt. Workshop:‚Undocumented Migrants and Their Access to Vaccination’
Full Title: "Undocumented Migrants in Europe and Their Access to COVID-19 Vaccination" The existing Corona pandemic is a challenge on several levels, not only for the European states, but for each and every one of its citizens. For example, most states provide both Corona tests and vaccines free of charge to their populations in order to contain the pandemic. Many citizens, however, who have easy access to these measures, refuse them, believing, for example, in a global pharmaceutical industry conspiracy. Undocumented migrants, on the other hand, are partially or completely excluded from these measures for various reasons. While it is not clear how many undocumented migrants live in Europe, it should also be in the interest of states to let them participate in the protective measures to fight the pandemic more efficiently. However, besides a potential mistrust of these measures, the fear of deportation seems to prevail in the case of undocumented migrants.

Fall Institute: 'A.I. The art of interpretation'
Practices of interpretation are central to both the humanities and social sciences, whose typical objects of interpretive activity range from artworks, texts and musical scores to rituals, economic behaviour and all manner of “data”. Yet the phenomenon of interpretation is no less puzzling than it is familiar and raises a host of fundamental questions: Can there be a science as well as an art of interpretation? Is interpretation an essentially human activity? Is there a difference between interpretive activity and programmable forms of data processing? Is interpretation by its nature a creative enterprise? Is it possible to develop something like an algorithm for interpretation? Do practices of interpretation as practiced by different disciplines share an essential common core? These and a host of related questions will occupy us at this year’s event. The seminars will be led by Prof. Dr. Markus Gabriel (Bonn), Prof. Dr. Zed Adams (New School) and Prof. Dr. Paul Kottmann (New School)

Symposium: 'Rethinking Privacy after this Pandemic'
At this conference we will undertake an interdisciplinary reconsideration of privacy, asking how we do want our society to look like based on what we saw, experienced and hopefully learned from the current present and recent past. The concerned disciplines range from different cultural and language studies, law, media studies, philosophy, political theory, psychology, sociology and surveillance studies to computer science and beyond. Contributions from bioethics, health sciences, medicine, etc. or the humanitarian sector are also welcome. The idea is to suggest a Manifesto for the Future of Privacy that can be signed by the participants. The symposium is part of a project funded by a special grant program for research into societal/social, legal and cultural impacts around the Covid-19 pandemic and related liberal arts research of the transdisciplinary research area ’Individuals, Institutions and Societies’ as part of the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments.
