The brain contains billions of neurons that are highly organized within different complex functional networks. These networks orderly compute this diverse sensory incoming information eventually resulting in causal behavioral expressions. However, the exact neuronal wiring diagram within and between neuronal network units at the level of the synapse -the neuronal hardware – and how active neuronal ensembles within this hardware are causally linked to behavior is still enigmatic. We think that the key to understand how neuronal information is orderly processed, finally allowing the execution of appropriate behaviors is to precisely map, functionally characterize and causally link active circuit components to all possible different behavioral expressions.
