Obtaining information before applying

Prospective students with health impairments can obtain information about the admission rules and the special applications that are available when applying for admission before they submit their applications.

General information

Application procedure at hochschulstart.de

Information on the admission rules for degree programs with nationwide admission limits and for the “dialogue-oriented service procedure” (DoSV) (both on hochschulstart.de) and their effects on participation by applicants with impairments is available in the FAQ by the Studying with Disabilities Information and Advice Center (IBS) of the Deutsches Studentenwerk.

University of Bonn application guide

Applications for admission to the University of Bonn are submitted online. The University of Bonn application guide leads you step by step to the appropriate application procedure. Those who want to submit special applications due to a disability or chronic illness should mark the corresponding field in the online application. The related supporting documents should be submitted in paper form to the Student Registry at the same time, if possible, but no later than the end of the application period.

Please contact the Student Registry if you have general questions about the application procedure.

Special applications

Disadvantages frequently arise during school years that could lead to poorer Abitur grades and lengthen the time spent in school. Under certain conditions, prospective students with disabilities or chronic illnesses may submit special applications in addition to the formal (online) application for admission. All admission procedures are based on the requirements and criteria of “hochschulstart” (Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung > Bewerbersupport (Foundation for University Admission > applicant support)). Although very strict standards are used when examining these special applications, the following applications can improve the chances of being admitted in justifiable cases:

01.

Increase your average grade

This special application allows you to present circumstances that prevented you from achieving a better average grade. These circumstances must not be your own fault.

02.

Decrease your waiting time

NOTE: this application is no longer possible starting as of summer semester 2023.

This special application allows you to present circumstances that prevented you from earning your university entrance qualification sooner. These circumstances must not be your own fault.

03.

Hardship cases

This special application allows you to present circumstances that might require that you be admitted immediately.

Other application requests

The higher semesters of some degree programs also have admission limits (e.g. Medicine, Psychology), i.e. an application for admission is required even when changing universities or degree programs. Admission can then only be granted if the number of students falls below the specified admission limit in the semester in question due to students withdrawing.

Priority admission is granted if a severe disability is recognized.

If you do not have a severe disability, but are tied to Bonn for health reasons, you can submit an application that must be supported by a specialist medical report. It must clearly indicate the reasons why specialist treatment is only possible at the desired place of study. Simple medical certificates—including those from specialists—are not sufficient.

Applications for master’s degree programs are submitted directly to the department concerned. Please contact the applicable subject-specific study advisory service if you have any questions.
