The centerpiece of the ceremony will be a speech by Rector Professor Michael Hoch, who will talk about some of the recent developments and future prospects at the University of Excellence. In May, for instance, the University once again emerged from the contest for Cluster of Excellence funding as the most successful entrant, securing eight projects—more than any other university in Germany.
Medals to honor outstanding service
Another particular highlight will be the awarding of the University Medal to four individuals who have rendered special service to the University of Bonn. This year’s recipients are Professor Klaus Borchard, Professor Dieter Engels, Professor Wolfgang Löwer and Professor Sigrid Peyerimhoff.
The event will be given musical accompaniment in the form of the University’s International Choir, with the Campus Brass Ensemble also on hand to play some ceremonial fanfares during the traditional entrance and exit of the Rectorate and deans. Sean Bonkowski, President of the General Students’ Committee at the University of Bonn, will offer a student’s perspective on the academic year, while Mayor Gabi Mayer will give a welcoming speech on behalf of the City of Bonn.
With its ceremony to open the academic year, the University of Bonn is not only marking the start of a new year but also the day it was founded, namely October 18, 1818.
