Doctoral Workshops with International Visiting Scholars

The program supports workshops and other small academic event formats in which doctoral students and visiting scholars with doctorates work together on an academic topic.

Deadlines

Applications can be submitted electronically at any time via the linked application form. A review is carried out quarterly at the following deadlines:

January 15, April 15, July 15, October 15

Funding Conditions

Doctoral students from every subject represented at the University of Bonn (in teams of 2-4 persons). The workshop must take place within 12 months of the submission deadline. Please note that the funding cannot be granted if the workshop has already taken place.

The invited visiting scholars with doctorates must include at least one international scholar. An international scholar is someone who is employed at a university or research institution abroad.

The following costs can be covered for supported workshops:

  • Travel costs for 1-4 scholars (according to DAAD lump sums [available in German only] or Landesreisekostengesetz [available in German only] for domestic scholars)
  • Accommodation costs for 1-4 national and international scholars (160 euros per night for a maximum of 4 nights)
  • Refreshments and meals (maximum 50 euros per participant per day) - please note the regulations for hospitality expenses.
  • Costs for design and printing of flyers or posters

In total, the requested funds may not exceed 3,000 euros. Exceptions can be made if international visiting scholars are flown in from outside Europe.

  • Excellency of the workshop concept
  • Integration of the workshop into the broader research environment at the University of Bonn
  • Scholarly excellence of the applicants
  • Scholarly excellence of the invited expert(s)
  • Importance of the workshop for the progress of the participants’ doctoral projects

The decision on the award of funding will be made by an interdisciplinary selection committee of scholars. The Bonn Graduate Center supports the members of the committee in an advisory capacity. The members are:

Jun.-Prof. Dr. Alessandro Bismuto, Prof. Dr. Sabine Feist, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Lorenzen, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Marie-Christine Simon  , Prof. Dr. Andreas Forstner and Jun.-Prof. Dr. Luna Rösinger.

The following documents need to be attached to the application:

  • Concept and schedule for the workshop (up to 3 pages)
  • Budget plan
  • Academic CVs for the doctoral student applicants1
  • Academic CV(s) for the participating visiting scholar(s)1
  • Brief explanation of the reasons for choosing the invited visiting scholar(s)

The review of the applications normally takes four to six weeks from the deadline. Please refrain from any inquiries in this regard during this period of time.

1 Family responsibilities, parental leave, illness and further breaks are, of course, taken into account. Please explain possible interruptions in your application.

When can I expect a decision on my application?

The decision on your application will be sent to you by email approximately six weeks after the deadline for applications. The deadline for applications applies, not the date on which you submitted your application. Please refrain from making any inquiries during this period.

What is meant by “international scholar”?

“International scholars” are defined as all researchers who are currently working at a university or research institution outside Germany and who hold a doctorate. Please note that only workshops involving at least one international scholar are eligible for funding.

Can the proposed workshop also take place at another research institution?

No, the workshops must take place at the University of Bonn. Workshops held at other research institutions that are not affiliated with the University of Bonn are not eligible for funding.

I am planning to provide catering during the workshop. What do I need to bear in mind here?

Please note the regulations for hospitality expenses first! You can spend up to 50 euros per participant per day of the event. This amount must not be exceeded. It is therefore necessary to take into account the approximate total number of participants when planning the workshop and to keep an eye on the total costs (including the travel and accommodation costs for the invited visiting scholars and any additional costs such as advertising measures). The total costs may not exceed 3,000 euros. If you wish to pay for the hospitality costs privately at first, e.g., as a result of a supermarket purchase or a restaurant visit, it is essential to submit a prior application for private payment.

We would like to give gifts to external guests. Is this possible?

You can give gifts such as a bouquet of flowers or chocolates as small gestures to special external guests. These representation expenses are possible up to a maximum value of 35 euros. The income tax references in §5 of the regulations for hospitality expenses must be observed when determining the cost of gifts. Please note that it is not possible to give gifts to internal persons/employees of the University of Bonn.

Please note

When planning trips in connection with this measure, please note the current travel advice from the Federal Foreign Office (in German).
