A hands-on project from the University of Bonn for the Science Year 2026

StadtLandMitmachbus marks Science Year 2026

The StadtLandMitmachbus—a bus packed with hands-on activities—will be bringing the medicine of the future from the big city into rural areas. Through interactive stations and direct dialogue with researchers, the general public will get to experience science communication live and up close, learning about innovative topics such as robotics in medicine and medical ethics. The project is geared toward getting non-city-dwellers actively involved, gathering ideas and coming up with new inspiration for research.

About the project

To mark the Science Year 2026, our medical-themed StadtLandMitmachbus will be wending its way through the Rhineland and Eifel countryside, enabling locals to engage with researchers and science in a fun and readily accessible way and contribute their own ideas. Rather then merely providing information, however, we are also keen to listen: In each of the five places the bus will stop, we will be collecting people ’s suggestions and questions to work through and use as potential inspiration for new research.

The area around the Mitmachbus will also be transformed into a mobile attraction in its own right. By embarking on a “gallery walk” featuring roll-ups or videos and by chatting to researchers, visitors will be presented with easy-to-understand knowledge about topics such as wearables, robotics in surgery, or ethical questions in medicine. A choice of free smoothies and cozy seating will invite them to linger that little bit longer.

The Science Year 2026—Medicine of the Future

Health is one of the most fundamental prerequisites to living well. The Science Year 2026 is focusing on how, even now, researchers are using their ideas and solutions to mold the medicine of tomorrow—a medicine that is preventive, personalized, digital and participatory.

How can prevention strategies be improved so that we get ill less often and less severely? How can innovative technologies and artificial intelligence support diagnoses and therapy without neglecting the human element? The medicine of the future is all about the individual needs of patients and more effective treatment. One particular focus during the Science Year is gender-sensitive research, which in the future will open up tailored medical treatment not only to women.

Join in the activities and discover, debate and design the medicine of the future together with representatives from the worlds of science, research, business, politics and the media—for the sake of the health of tomorrow.

Other funded projects

The medicine of the future is not just being created in the lab; members of the public can also play their part by doing more for their own health, sharing their health data for research purposes and getting involved in healthcare research.

The funded projects offer an opportunity to discover and shape the medicine of the future together with new and creative approaches to science communication for young and old, amateurs and professionals.

“Ask a Bonn Researcher”

For the researchers at the University of Bonn, there is no such thing as a silly question. They will gather up questions from passersby and provide the answers in a short video.

Life-Long Learning University

The Life-Long Learning University is aimed at the general public—including students in all faculties and anyone from outside the University who might be interested—who can take part in courses, presentations, debates, exhibitions and guided tours.
