Summer School on Intellectual Property

University of Bonn

July 15 – 26, 2019, Bonn, Germany

The University of Bonn invites students and young professionals from any field of study or discipline to a Summer School on Intellectual Property (IP) in Bonn, Germany.
 

Classes cover the main areas of Intellectual Property:

  • Introduction to IP
  • Patents and Trade Secrets
  • IP Management
  • Copyright
  • Trademarks
  • Industrial Designs
  • Unfair Competition
  • IP and Contracts
     

Guest lecturers from Intellectual Property organisations, innovative companies, research facilities, law offices, and the University of Bonn add to the portfolio of topics. The programme is completed with excursions to institutions and companies in the area. 

Objective

The Summer School introduces students to the main areas of Intellectual Property and examines important Intellectual Property issues. The students will be able to discuss Intellectual Property issues with professionals from Intellectual Property organisations, innovative companies, research facilities, law offices, and the University of Bonn.  

The Summer School aims to provide graduate and postgraduate students as well as young professionals with insight into the field of Intellectual Property and an appreciation of the significant role of Intellectual Property in furthering the economic and technological development, and particularly in promoting innovation. 

Programme*

Classes

The classes cover the main areas of Intellectual Property. 

They encompass eight modules:

  • Module 1 Introduction to IP
  • Module 2 Patents & Trade Secrets
  • Module 3 IP Management
  • Module 4 Copyright
  • Module 5 Trademarks
  • Module 6 Unfair Competition
  • Module 7 IP & Contracts
  • Module 8 Industrial Designs


Guest Lectures


In addition to classes, the programme offers guest lectures on selected issues of Intellectual Property.

Excursions


Furthermore, the programme includes excursions to insitutions and interesting sights in the area.

In the past years we visited the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR / German Aerospace Center), Cologne for example.

Instructors and Guest Lecturers  

The instructors and guest lecturers are experts from Intellectual Property organisations, innovative companies, research facilities, law offices, and the University of Bonn.

A full list of Instructors and Guest Lecturers will be made available in spring 2019. 

Requirements

Before you register, please check whether you fulfill the following requirements:
 

  • You are an enrolled student or a young professional from any field or discipline (participation is not limited to law students or legal professionals).
  • You have an adequate command of English (corresponding to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference).

Application / Registration

Application Deadline: April 7, 2019
Successful applications will be notified within 10 days after the deadline.
 

Procedures

To apply, complete the online application form with your personal data and upload the following documents:

  • Résumé / curriculum vitae 
  • Letter of motivation (500 words) illustrating why you wish to participate in the Summer School and what you hope to gain from your participation.

Additionally, in case you wish to apply for a grant (see details below): 

  • Enrollment document
  • Recommendation letter from a professor of your university.
  • Copy of your transcript of records.

  • 760 €

  • Housing

  • Insurance

Grants

A very limited number of grants will be awarded by the University of Bonn to excellent Summer School applicants. Only enrolled students can apply for a grant. The grant covers partially or fully your participation fee. Participants will still be responsible for financing housing and meals by themselves. 

Please also consider exploring other sources of financial aid. Your home institution might be able to advise you on financial aid possibilities. 

Certificate of Attendance / ECTS Credits

At the last day of the Summer School, each participant who regularly attended the programme will receive a Certificate of Attendance

Unfortunately, we cannot award ECTS credits.  If you wish to receive credits from your home university, please get in touch with the responsible department there. It is up to them to decide if they credit your attendance in the summer school.

Accommodation

The Summer School is unfortunately not able to provide housing in Bonn.

If you are however interested in obtaining a list of accommodation possibilities, please write an email to IPsummerschool(at)uni-bonn.de.

Please also note that housing in Bonn is in high demand. Thus, we recommend beginning the search for housing possibilities as soon as you are accepted into the Summer School.

Insurance, Liability and Applicable Law

Any participant of the Summer School must have insurance covering health, accident and personal liability risks. The Summer School is not able to provide health, accident and liability insurance. It is the responsibility of the participants to take care of such insurance coverage. The University of Bonn´s liability for any damage occurring during the programme (including excursions, social activities, leisure programs etc.) is limited to the extent legally possible. The applicable law for the implementation of the programme is German law.

Visa

Please indicate on the application form if you need an official letter from the University of Bonn confirming your admission to the Summer School in order to apply for a visa. The letter will be sent with the admission notification.

Please also note that all visa procedures remain in the responsibility of the participants and must be taken care of in due time.
