The Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Bonn invites applications for a

W3 Professorship for Medieval and Modern Church History

to commence on October 1, 2027.

The ideal candidate will represent the discipline of medieval and modern church history through their teaching and research, make fundamental contributions in both areas of the subject and develop innovative perspectives on research and teaching. They will need a degree in Catholic Theology, a relevant doctorate in Catholic Theology and a Habilitation or achievements deemed equivalent to a Habilitation.

The future post holder will have published in international journals and possess an international research network. They will have experience of cooperation projects and applying for third-party funding. Their work will enrich the teaching already offered in the subject in terms of its quality and originality. They will need evidence of very good teaching skills (ideally in the form of teaching evaluations and completed advanced training courses in university teaching).

The successful candidate is expected to be seen to represent their research in recognized national and international research contexts, contribute actively to research partnerships and collaborative projects in Germany and abroad, and make a sustained effort to secure third-party funding.

The future post holder will need a high degree of commitment to teaching and degree program development and be willing to undertake continuing professional development in teaching methodology. Under the University’s partnership with the University of Cologne, some of the teaching will be done on its teaching degree programs. The successful candidate must be prepared to teach in English. In light of the faculty’s research theme of 
“Ambiguities—Identities—Designs of Meaning,” the future post holder will be expected to contribute to its research projects and be involved in the University of Bonn’s interdisciplinary projects and one of its Transdisciplinary Research Areas. A willingness to play a role in academic self-administration is also required.


The conditions of employment will be in accordance with § 36 of the Higher Education Act of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz, HG).
