The objectives of the university-wide agreement now concluded include the establishment of joint research projects in various disciplines and a stronger exchange of young scientists, in particular through the launch of additional joint doctoral programs.
The Cluster of Excellence ImmunoSensation and the University of Melbourne have been working closely together since 2016: Under the name “Bonn & Melbourne Research and Graduate School” (Bo&MeRanG), the two partners are jointly coordinating an International Research Training Group with over 30 jointly supervised doctorates. In the coming years, cooperation in medicine as well as in the life and biosciences will be further expanded by the BMBF-funded “Bonn & Melbourne Academy for Excellence in ImmunoSciences/Infection” (BM-AXIS). 20 scientists traveled to Melbourne for the kick-off event at the renowned Doherty Institute of the University of Melbourne. The program directors of BM-AXIS are Prof. Dr. Christian Kurts (University of Bonn) and Prof. Dr. Sammy Bedoui (University of Melbourne).
Australia is one of the strategic priority countries of the University of Bonn. For this reason, existing contacts are to be intensified in the future. The University of Bonn has already concluded student exchange agreements with the Australian National University (Canberra) and the University of New South Wales (Sydney). The resumption of such an agreement with LaTrobe University was negotiated during the rectorate visit. So far, there are about 22 research cooperations with Australia - and the trend is rising.
While the Rector, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch, sent his congratulations by video message to Melbourne, the University of Bonn was also represented at the signing by the Vice Rector for University Planning and Development, Prof. Dr. Klaus Sandmann, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Nicholas Wernert, and the Vice Dean of International Affairs of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Ettinger. Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor James McCluskey also attended the ceremony on behalf of the University of Melbourne.
