The opening ceremony of the new permanent exhibition of the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn with the title "The World in Transition" was held on October 12, 2023.

The celebrations were followed by a panel discussion featuring Prof. Dr. Annette Scheersoi, Vice Rector for Sustainability at the University of Bonn, Museum Director Thorsten Valk, Tabea Leukhardt, Director of the Institut für Zukunftskultur and author and activist Samuel Kramer, convened to discuss the fundamental possibility of sustainability in museums.

The LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn is currently engaged in a process of asking itself how it can reflect on the past in its role as a museum of cultural history, whilst not losing sight of future challenges, i.e. the development of a sustainable design for museum operations and resource conservation.

The museum is concerned not only to raise awareness of the issue of sustainability, but also with reflecting critically on its own ecological footprint, for instance in relation to the loan of works of art.

Vice Rector Scheersoi provided her support to the design and development of the permanent exhibition. The museum is benefiting greatly from her specialist knowledge of sustainability in teaching and research and her practical experience of establishing a culture of sustainability at a large research institution, the University of Bonn. The new permanent exhibition constitutes an interface between academia and society.
