Molecular Cell Biology

All biological processes have a molecular foundation, which we must understand in order to grasp life itself and to learn the causes of disease. Organisms represent the highest form of organization, and the governing principles encompass many orders of magnitude from the level of molecules, to cells, to unique organs. The objective of the Molecular Cell Biology degree program is to teach students these principles comprehensively. Students receive an overview of a broad spectrum of modern cell-biological, biochemical, genetic and computer-aided methods, which enables them to answer fundamental questions from biology and medical research.

Given that the master's degree program straddles three faculties (Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Medicine, Agriculture), it offers students access to a one-of-a-kind spectrum of thematic orientations and elective modules. It is also the explicit intent of the master's degree program that students upon completion of their master’s degree, immediately continue their studies towards a doctorate.


Possible lines of work:

Basic research in all areas of the life sciences as well as in (bio-)medical research (institutes of the Max Planck Society, big-science facilities, etc.), managerial position in the pharmaceutical industry, academia (teaching/research at universities, research institutions, etc.)

Examination Regulations (German versions are legally binding)

University degree (German or non-German) in a relevant discipline

English language proficiency (CEFR level B2)

Minimum grade of 2.7 or local equivalent

Practical knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology and cell biology at the level of the Bachelor of Biology in the amount of 5 ECTS each (total 20 ECTS) or an equivalent proof.

Applicants from outside Germany or another EU country must pass the aptitude test for university studies.
