Global Health

Global Health is an interdisciplinary field that aims to improve health and health equity worldwide. In addition to the classic challenges of infection, malnutrition and inadequate health care, new challenges, such as antibiotic resistance, the increase in lifestyle-related diseases, migration and the climate crisis are increasingly being addressed.

Students acquire knowledge and understanding in the areas of global health, global clinical care, non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, infectious disease prevention and control, healthcare systems, development policy and humanitarian aid, food security, One Health, risk assessment and management and Sustainable Development Goals in this interdisciplinary program. Interdisciplinary approaches allow the health implications of different circumstances to be analyzed and compared, especially in resource-poor settings. The ultimate objective is for students to be able to make decisions about the appropriateness of health interventions based on scientific findings while taking environmental, socio-cultural, political, economic and ethical factors into account.

The English-language master’s degree program in Global Health Risk Management is aimed at university graduates with at least one year of relevant work experience who would like to acquire additional scientifically sound qualifications. It is offered by the University of Bonn in cooperation with the Institute for Environment and Human Security (EHS) at the United Nations University (UNU). At the University of Bonn, the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Agriculture and Center for Development Research are involved in teaching and the supervision of master’s theses.

Possible Lines of Work:

Coordination in the area of healthcare at international institutions and organizations (e.g. WHO in the UN system, World Bank, UNEP and UNICEF or global programs such as GFATM and GAVI), in national healthcare systems (public authorities, ministries, healthcare facilities), development cooperation (e.g. GIZ), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or the private healthcare sector (e.g. companies providing medical and pharmaceutical products)

Tuition: €9,700 total

Master’s degree programs for continuing education are subject to tuition. The amount of tuition depends on the range of courses offered in the particular degree program and is based the program’s scale of charges.
