First EXIST Women participants start at the University of Bonn First EXIST Women participants start at the University of Bonn

New support for women on the way to starting a business

16 participants have started the first EXIST Women program at the University of Bonn. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK), the Transfer Center enaCom is supporting the women from four faculties (Mathematics, Philosophy, Medicine and Agriculture) with a one-year program of workshops, mentoring and networking on their way to setting up a business. Ten of the participants will receive a grant of up to a total of 9,000 euros for three months as well as a lump sum of 2,000 euros for material costs to advance their start-up idea. The University of Bonn is one of the first universities in Germany to launch the EXIST Women program.

The first cohort of the University of Bonn for the EXIST Women program shows the whole range of subjects, ideas and backgrounds for potential start-ups. The female students, researchers and alumnae of the University of Bonn from the fields of astronomy, geodesy, geoinformation and neuroscience come from a wide range of disciplines. However, their motivation to take part in the new program is similar.

"For me as a founder, it's not just about starting a company. It's also about facing challenges, learning from experience and taking innovative and more sustainable paths. Not always just looking for the shorter or easier route," says one of the participants at the kick-off event. One of the young scientists is taking part in the program because she finds concrete measures crucial for achieving a goal. "My ultimate career goal is to start my own healthcare company that specializes in digital technologies. By participating in this program and networking with like-minded people, I believe I can boost my confidence and focus on achieving my entrepreneurial dream." An alumna of the university is starting the EXIST Women program with a social innovation to improve our coexistence. "If we are passionate about something, like I am about my idea, then success is guaranteed," says the participant.

Intensive start-up work with workshops and coaching sessions

The EXIST Women program offers these and all other participants a series of events, workshops and coaching sessions to develop their business ideas and identify growth opportunities. "We are looking forward to a year of intensive start-up work with this group full of promising ideas and personalities," says Sandra Speer, Head of the Transfer Center enaCom, which offers the program at the University of Bonn. Over the next twelve months, comprehensive specialist knowledge relevant to start-ups will be imparted with workshops ranging from "Startus-Quo-Analysis" and "Working on the Idea" to "Business Plan, Legal Matters and Taxes", "Entrepreneurial Personality" and "Personal Branding". The topics of "Body language, image and presence" and "Balancing start-up and family/life plans" are also covered, as is networking at events such as the Female Founders Festival. The participants are supported by experienced experts throughout the entire period.

The Transfer Center enaCom, as the central point of contact for those interested in founding a company at the University of Bonn, addresses the promotion of female founders with its activities in the field of female entrepreneurship at various levels through specific qualification offers and especially in personal advice. The EXIST Women program and scholarships thus complement a range of other measures in this area.

One of the goals of the German government's start-up strategy is to strengthen female start-up founders and diversity. For this reason, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) has launched the new "EXIST Women" initiative.
