The University of Bonn Transdisciplinary Research Areas (TRAs) aim to jointly support highly innovative, transdisciplinary collaborative research projects from researchers from at least two different TRAs. The funded projects should address new and relevant questions at the interface between disciplines or should aim at the development of new tools, which push the borders of existing research questions.

The innovative and cross-disciplinary nature of the proposal is the most important requirement for funding. A continuation of already established projects will not be funded.

The successful proposals (up to three) will receive a funding of up to 50.000 EUR. This funding can be freely used for the described project within DFG funding regulations and should ideally be spent in 2024.

Expected are joint applications from at least two project leaders from at least two different TRAs, working in different research areas. Only university members of the TRAs are eligible to apply. Funding can also be awarded to postdocs who are members of a TRA or are hosted within the group of a university TRA member.

The proposal should contain a convincing and conclusive description of the planned project and its innovative and inter-/transdisciplinary character. With respect to Open Science, the proposal should also briefly describe how the results of the proposed project will be disseminated and how researchers from Bonn and beyond will be able to profit from or be able to access the expected results. Application deadline is April 7, 2024.

Selection process

The proposals will be evaluated by a cross-TRA selection committee, supported by reviewers from those TRAs that are thematically connected to the topic of the proposal. Subsequently, short-listed projects will be invited for a presentation to the selection committee for the final decision.

Selection criteria will be:
• Innovativeness
• Inter-/transdisciplinary character
• Quality of the proposed project
• Qualification of the applicants for this project
• Potential to create impact for future research between the TRAs. Exclusion criteria are:
• Projects not directed by members of at least two different TRAs and different research areas.
• Continuation of running projects or already existing collaborations


Guidelines
• The application should contain the application form including the description of the proposal (not more than
8 pages A4, font size 11 in total), as well as a short CV (max. 2 pages) of the main applicants.
• Applicants should make clear the state of the art, explain how the proposal goes beyond it and provide a
balanced description of feasibility and risky aspects of the project. The proposal should be concise, but still be
understandable in an interdisciplinary context without additional resources.
• Applications can be submitted in English or German. German applications have to contain a summary in English.
• The application should contain the outline of a spending plan.
• Spending plan: If funding of a PhD student is planned, please state how supervision will be organized and how
funding after the initial TRA-funded period will be guaranteed. No investment costs for basic equipment (e.g.
standard office PCs) can be covered. In case of project-related acquisitions, maintenance and depreciation
must be ensured by the applicants' institutions.  
• A final report will have to be submitted at the latest four months after the end of the project to the TRA
management.
