The annual Leiden Ranking uses a complex methodology involving bibliometric analyses to evaluate universities’ academic performance. This is based on a range of indicators that are applied to the institution as a whole as well as to specific fields. A total of 1,318 universities all over the world were compared in 2022.

In terms of the share of its publications that make it into the top 1 percent of those cited most frequently, the University of Bonn is ranked second overall in Germany. In mathematics and computer science, 13.8 percent of the University’s publications are among the most-cited 10 percent in their respective subject, putting mathematics at the University of Bonn in third place in Germany. The University is ranked 142nd in the world for life and earth sciences. For biomedical and health sciences, meanwhile, the University of Bonn’s researchers have been placed 159th worldwide in terms of the best 1 percent of publications and an outstanding 34th for the social sciences and humanities.

The University of Bonn’s strong partnerships with leading researchers the world over are illustrated by its performance in the “International collaboration” section of the Leiden Ranking, which indicates what percentage of a university’s publications were produced together with partners all over the world. Overall, the University of Bonn ranks third in Germany and 157th in the world. In terms of its share of publications involving international collaboration, it is top of the tree for social sciences and humanities as well as physical sciences and engineering in Germany (81st and 72nd respectively worldwide).

The strong links that the University enjoys with the brightest minds across the globe are particularly evident when it comes to “long distance collaborative publications (>5,000 km),” where it occupies no fewer than three top spots in Germany: in the overall rating, in social sciences and humanities, and in physical sciences and engineering.

At 67.5 percent, the share of the University’s publications that are open access, i.e. that allow free access via the Internet, is comparatively high and puts it third in Germany. Physical sciences and engineering (81.4 percent) and mathematics and computer science (76.9 percent) boast the highest percentages of open-access publications at the University of Bonn, thus ranking it top in Germany.

“We made internationalization a key priority of our 2019 Excellence Strategy,” says Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch, Rector of the University of Bonn. “The very good positions we’ve secured in many of the Ranking’s categories are proof that this was the right thing to do and gives us a great competitive advantage over other universities.”
