The University of Excellence introduced its annual central ceremony to bid farewell to its graduates back in 2005. This year’s event will move from the Hofgarten to the KUNST!RASEN site due to construction and renovation work on the University Main Building. The festival grounds in the Rheinaue boast some outstanding infrastructure for this large-scale event with several thousand guests. Usually the preserve of international performers, on July 11 the venue will shine a spotlight on the University’s graduates, nearly 2,000 of whom have signed up for the celebrations.
The agenda includes the ceremonial presentation of the decorative certificates, a program on the main stage and numerous stalls and hands-on activities dotted around the site. Among other things, guests will be able to learn about the University’s activities and services, sample some culinary delights and make memories of their graduation to last a lifetime. As ever, one special highlight of the celebrations and a symbol for successful completion of studies is the traditional tossing of hats. Yet the Universitätsfest is also one big reunion, with graduates from all the faculties coming together to celebrate the end of an important chapter in their lives. For many families and groups of friends, the day is something else as well, namely an opportunity to experience the University of Bonn as a place of learning, encounters and community.
