International Security Forum in Bonn International Security Forum in Bonn

CASSIS at the University of Bonn to host discussion on global power shifts, religious extremism and global energy transitions

“A World out of Joint – Global Power Shifts and Religious Extremism”: this will be the focus of the Main Day at this year’s International Security Forum Bonn, which is being held at the University of Bonn from Thursday, 19 to Sunday, 22, October. Meanwhile, the Bonn Future Lab on Strategic Foresight will be tackling the topic of “Global Energy Transitions” on October 20. The Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) at the University of Bonn is organizing the high-caliber event at the Universitätsforum at Heussallee 18–24 in Bonn together with key partners including the Academy of International Affairs NRW (AIA-NRW), the German Economic Institute (IW) and the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). Representatives of the media are warmly invited to attend for reporting purposes, while there will also be various public events open to anyone who might be interested.

The largest security policy conference in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and its neighboring states, the International Security Forum Bonn will once again be under the patronage of NRW’s state premier Hendrik Wüst this year. A live link-up with Tel Aviv University is planned during the event, while the University’s academic partners at St Andrews in Scotland will also be closely involved.

The public events include, ahead of the conference itself, the German-French “Strategic Dialogue on Power Shifts” (in German), which is scheduled for 3 pm to 4:30 pm on Wednesday, October 18, at the Institut français in Bonn at Adenauerallee 35. Interested members of the public are also welcome at the first keynote speech, “Strategic Pathways for Sustainable Hydrogen Evolution,” from 9 am to 10:15 am on Friday, October 20, at the Universitätsforum Bonn at Heussallee 18–24 (in English). Likewise, the second keynote speech, entitled “Geopolitics of Hydrogen,” is also open to the public. It will be held from 2:30 pm to 3:15 pm on Friday, October 20, at the Universitätsforum Bonn at Heussallee 18–24 (in English).

The Main Day (October 19) will focus on pressing transatlantic issues and take a transatlantic look at the challenges to security policy posed by religious extremism. It will be followed by the Bonn Future Lab on Strategic Foresight (symposium on October 20, workshop on October 21 and 22), which explores sustainability issues from a strategic perspective and will be devoted to the topic of “Global Energy Transitions” this year.

In addition, 30 “managers of the future” will come together for a workshop to familiarize themselves with techniques and methods of strategic foresight in order to learn how to “think through” alternative futures methodically in the interests of sustainable and strategic forward planning.

The conference, which features an illustrious lineup, will be opened by Professor Birgit Ulrike Münch, Vice Rector for International Affairs at the University of Bonn, and Professor Andreas Zimmer, its Vice Rector for Research and Early-Career Researchers. Confirmed guests for the Main Day include the US Consul General Evelyn Kao and the Pakistani Ambassador the Hon. Saqlain Syedah, while President of the Bundesnachrichtendienst Dr. Bruno Kahl is also among the invitees.
