Today, the Excellence Commission announced that the University of Cologne will receive funding as a University of Excellence starting in 2027. The Rector of the University of Bonn, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Michael Hoch, commented: “On behalf of the University of Excellence Bonn, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Rector Joybrato Mukherjee and the faculty and staff of the University of Cologne on this tremendous success! For many years, we have been linked by an exceptionally close partnership—which has resulted in three joint Clusters of Excellence and many other collaborative projects. Together, we form the nucleus of one of Europe’s most productive research regions. I am convinced that, as two Universities of Excellence on the Rhine, we will continue to strengthen our collaboration on this outstanding foundation in the future.”

Warmest congratulations from the University of Excellence in Bonn also go to the Ruhr Innovation Lab—comprising Ruhr University Bochum and the Technical University of Dortmund—which will also receive funding as a University Consortium of Excellence starting in 2027. The University of Bonn is linked to TU Dortmund, among other things, through the Lamarr Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, as well as through the “Color meets Flavor” Cluster of Excellence, which brings together cutting-edge research in particle physics in Bonn, Siegen, Dortmund, and the Jülich Research Center.
