Among its German peers, therefore, the University of Bonn has defended its leading position of recent years behind only the Technical University of Munich in 45th, the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 49th and Heidelberg University in 59th. Together with these three universities, Bonn is the only German higher-education institution to make it into the Shanghai Ranking’s top 100 for 2026.

“Confirmation of our successful strategy for the future”

“In March of this year, we reaffirmed our position as the most successful university in the Excellence Strategy. The fact that we are now once again among the top universities in Germany, Europe, and the world in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking demonstrates the outstanding and consistently strong performance of the University of Bonn as a center of excellence,” says the Rector of the University of Bonn, Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Michael Hoch. “This success is not only a reflection of our academic achievements but also a confirmation of our successful strategy for the future, which we are consistently developing and implementing. Our next goal is to be among the top 50 universities in the world by the end of 2032. This ranking provides an excellent foundation for achieving that goal.”

The University of Bonn’s placings have thus changed only slightly year on year, as 2025 saw it achieve 68th position worldwide alongside 4th in Germany and 11th in the EU. The latest results thus confirm the University’s remarkable consistency within the international leading pack.

Published every year since 2003, the Shanghai Ranking focuses on universities’ research output. This is assessed based on six indicators including Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals won by alumni and researchers, the number of highly cited researchers, papers published in the journals “Nature” and “Science,” academic and scientific publications overall and research output relative to institution size. The rankings consider over 2,500 universities, with the best 1,000 in the world making it onto the final published list.

As Germany’s most successful University of Excellence with eight Clusters of Excellence, the University of Bonn is devising solutions to the global challenges of the 21st century. From its home in Bonn—Germany’s city of the United Nations—it brings together top-level research, excellent teaching and an unshakable commitment to diversity. It promotes talented individuals at all stages of their careers, inspires the next generation of leaders and generates knowledge that is accelerating progress in society and technology.
