THE Ranking: University of Bonn in World’s Top 100 Once Again THE Ranking: University of Bonn in World’s Top 100 Once Again

An outstanding result for the University of Bonn

The UK-based magazine “Times Higher Education” (THE) has compiled its internationally renowned THE World University Ranking, which compares some 1,900 universities, for the past 20 years now. The University of Bonn came in 91st globally and 6th in Germany, putting it in the world’s top 100 universities. One noticeable aspect was that, compared to other institutions, a change to the methodology used in the rankings had virtually no impact on the University’s excellent results.

A total of 49 German universities made their way into the rankings, including 8 in the top 100. Compared with its German peers, the University of Bonn performed best in the “Research Environment,” “Teaching” and “Research Quality” categories, where it came 7th, 7th and 8th respectively. By far the University’s best score in a global comparison came in the “Research Quality” category, which is calculated based on four bibliometric sub-indicators.

“Various sets of rankings have now placed the University of Bonn firmly in the top 100 in the world,” says Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch, Rector of the University of Bonn. “These very good results make it clear that our efforts to secure and retain high-caliber researchers for the University of Bonn and give them an attractive environment for their research are having a visible impact regardless of the assessment criteria.”

This year’s THE WUR covers 1,904 participating universities from 108 countries. All four of the new countries that have been added are in Europe (Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Armenia). Seventeen indicators are used to compare the universities in five categories focusing on their research, teaching, internationalization and links with industry. The addition of four new indicators this year caused many German universities to slip down the rankings, whereas the University of Bonn has largely managed to retain its placings year on year.
