Ancient Latin Literature and its Tradition

The degree program involves linguistics and literature and focuses on reading, translating and interpreting original Latin texts from antiquity based on a linguistic, stylistic and formal analysis. A sound knowledge of Latin is required in order to enable an in-depth understanding and independent study of Latin literature. Students interpret the texts within their historical and cultural context, which mainly includes the aspects of history and society, literary history, mythology, religion and philosophy.

An interest in and enthusiasm for ancient literature and its languages are the most important prerequisites for a successful study of Latin. Studying the texts that have done much to shape the European tradition of intellectual history will also help students to develop an understanding of the present. Aside from studying ancient Latin literature, another main focus at the University of Bonn is its reception. The teaching combines traditional textual analysis with approaches drawn from modern literary theory.

This subject must be combined with a second subject.
