University of Bonn researchers to showcase their projects in the city center on May 12 and 13

“nach(haltig)geforscht” (“Sustainability Investigated”) is the title given to this year’s Bonn Science Night, which is returning following a COVID-19-enforced hiatus. On May 12 and 13, an army of exhibitors from the University of Bonn and the region’s universities of applied sciences and research and other scientific institutions will be presenting current research projects all about sustainability. Seventeen tents and three indoor sites will stretch from Münsterplatz in the city center all the way to Bottlerplatz/Mülheimer Platz and Friedensplatz. The event will be open from 9 am to 6 pm on Thursday, May 12 and from 9 am to 11 pm on Friday, May 13.

How can we feed ourselves in a way that is healthy both for us and for our planet? How are human-induced changes in land use and intensive water management influencing the regional climate? And how can drones and robots help to make crop production more sustainable? The 13th Bonn Science Night will see researchers from all manner of different subjects at the University of Bonn come together to introduce their research projects on the topic of sustainability.

Visitors of all ages can look forward to some enthralling hands-on activities and experiments as well as fascinating exhibitions and talks by researchers. The University of Bonn will be contributing in several ways:

Tent 1 on Münsterplatz will contain information on many exciting projects about sustainable eating, health and healthcare presented in partnership with the University Hospital Bonn. In Tents 8 and 9 on Mülheimer Platz, visitors will find out all they need to know about digital technologies in agriculture and how bio-economics is boosting sustainability. Meanwhile, researchers will be on hand in Tents 15 and 16 on Friedensplatz to demonstrate how they are using powerful model forecasts to try and understand climate change and what development and transformation in rural Africa might look like, among other things. The Youth University of Bonn will also be taking over Tent 3 with a range of activities for children, young people and schools.

The talks by the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research, which also includes researchers from the University of Bonn, will be held in the Haus der Bildung and the Gangolfsaal by Bonn Minster.

Researching across discipline boundaries

As a University of Excellence, the University of Bonn boasts a strong setup in many areas of sustainability research. This includes PhenoRob, Germany’s only Cluster of Excellence in the agricultural sciences, the Collaborative Research Centers 1502 “DETECT” and Transregio 228 “Future Rural Africa,” and the Center for Development Research (ZEF). The University’s Sustainable Futures Transdisciplinary Research Area connects and supports researchers from different disciplines and faculties so that they can work together on institutional innovations for sustainability that are driven by science and technology.

Many other institutions from Bonn and its surrounding area will be taking part in the Science Night alongside the University of Bonn. And the action will not just be confined to the tents, with the city’s tourist information office also offering the opportunity to discover some exciting research. Plus there will be talks and debates in the Haus der Bildung and the Gangolfsaal by Bonn Minster.
