Together against Antibiotic Resistance Together against Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotics are major weapons in the fight against bacterial infections. However, antibiotics are increasingly losing efficacy due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is a most serious threat, that besides limiting our option to treat bacterial infections, also restricts modern medical therapies and treatments, such as chemotherapy, transplantation and surgery.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an insidious threat and antibiotic bacteria already cause more than 1,27 million deaths every year. AMR is not only a threat to humans, but also to animals, plants and the environment - it affects us all - worldwide. This is why this year’s theme of the „World Antimicrobial Awareness Week“ calls for collaboration across sectors to preserve the efficacy of these critical medicines. Fighting AMR is a truly global endeavor that can only be addressed through a “One Health” approach.

This year, the theme of the annual campaign brought to live by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together” and celebrated still until 24 November.

Together scientists of the DFG-funded transregional collaborative center TRR 261 “Antibiotic CellMAP” from the Universities and University Hospitals at Bonn and Tübingen support the campaign and call for a prudent use of antibiotics and to prevent antibiotic resistance together.
