Strong Interest in the ML4Q Career & Technology Day 2026

The Cluster of Excellence “Matter and Light for Quantum Computing” (ML4Q) hosted the ML4Q Career & Technology Day 2026 in February. In collaboration with partners from academia and technology transfer, including the Transfer Center enaCom, the event brought together students, early-career researchers, alumni, and representatives from the quantum industry. ML4Q is a joint research consortium of the Universities of Bonn, Cologne, and Aachen, as well as Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Insights into Diverse Career Paths

The morning focused on Alumni Career Talks. Former researchers shared their personal career journeys and highlighted a variety of professional paths, ranging from academic research to start-ups and roles in technology development. Participants not only gained authentic insights but also concrete tips for transitioning into non-academic career fields.

Challenges and Opportunities in the Industry

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to perspectives from the industry. In a panel discussion, representatives from the University of Bonn - including Dr. Daniela Treutlein from the Transfer Center enaCom - joined representatives from the University of Cologne and companies such as IBM, Arque Systems, and Elmos Semiconductors SE to discuss the unique challenges that companies are facing in the field of quantum technologies. Particular emphasis was put on the importance of close collaboration between research and industry to successfully translate innovations into practical applications.

IBM is involved in the development of quantum computing platforms, while Arque Systems specializes in innovative solutions in the field of quantum technologies. Elmos Semiconductors SE contributes expertise in the development of semiconductor solutions, which form an important foundation for many technological applications. The Transfer Center enaCom supports knowledge and technology transfer at the University of Bonn and provides consulting on all topics related to start-ups, inventions, and innovations from research.

The ML4Q Career & Technology Day 2026 provided an opportunity to make new contacts and offered valuable insights for the participants’ professional futures.
