In order to be officially listed as signatories at the ceremony, all participating universities were asked to submit the signed document to the Magna Charta Observatory in advance. Rector Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch signed the Magna Charta for the University of Bonn. This was captured in a short video:

The Magna Charta Universitatum describes the self-conception of universities in Europe and around the world, based on the idea of scientific autonomy and freedom. The document was first signed in 1988 on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the University of Bologna, the oldest university in Europe. Today, almost a thousand universities around the world are committed to the Magna Charta Universitatum.

Rector Prof. Hoch says: "The University of Bonn fully shares the values of the Magna Charta document, not least against the background of our location in the German City of the United Nations and the cradle of German democracy after World War II. Therefore, we are extremely pleased to be a member of the Magna Charta Universitatum to jointly implement and further promote the ideals of science in Europe."

The Magna Charta document is available in all 49 languages of the member universities - the following link provides more information and the Magna Charta Universitatum itself: http://www.magna-charta.org
